And now, Haru's Story part 2
So now I believe it is important to introduce the Wolves in this story as they irrevocably change Haru’s life.
First of all, the wolf demons, or Ookami Youkai, of my little world are fairly similar to those in Inuyasha: They are tribal, organized into clans, and have wolfish attributes and pointy ears. They aren’t all evil, the Ookami Youkai, except for one…
Enter Kahoku.
Kahoku was the younger brother of the clan chief for a large demon wolf clan. Under his brother’s reign, the wolves lived in relative peace and prosperity….and, to some, boredom. "Some" like his younger brother who thirsted for power as a man trapped in the desert. Kahoku resented peace, resented his brother’s complacency with their territory, and decided to do something about it. In secret he gathered together the cruelest, most violent members of the clan, mostly the young ones, and staged a coup. But he didn’t kill his brother. No. Sadly, that task fell upon someone else’s shoulders.
This is Rafe, only son of the clan chief and nephew to Kahoku. When he was a pup he had revered his uncle for his self-confidence, determination, and ambition, qualities that Rafe did not feel he possessed. But Kahoku hid his true colors from Rafe, knowing, one day, that he might become his greatest ally or a formidable foe and so he kept him close and idolizing.
The night of the coup Rafe, his mother and his father were seized as they slept by Kahoku’s personal guard of snickering, lascivious, sadists. Tied up and surrounded, the victorious Ookami strode into the room and made his terrible proposition to the young Rafe. Kill your father, join me as my Second, and your mother will live. If not, prepare to watch your father die and your mother raped and slaughtered before you go to meet them.
At 16, still unconfident and terrified, Rafe made his decision…
That morning he joined Kahoku’s personal guard, kneeling at a throne of his father’s bones as his uncle ascended. Rafe’s mother wept quietly in her tea room, safe, but trapped. Her health was assured by the new clan chief as long as Rafe remained loyal. As she lamented the loss of both of her men she recalled her brother-in-law's parting words as he fingered a lock of her black hair. “If you choose an honorable death, your son will live in unbearable agony for the rest of his natural life…”
Kahoku’s evil designs were without limit. He used his newfound power base to accumulate more land and more power. His devious intelligence enabled him to ferret out the secret weaknesses of every man, woman, and child he came in contact with and could manipulate like no other. His evil genius, however, was matched only by his viciousness; Without a thought Kahoku could torture and murder babies if it suited his purposes. When he lost his calm, those around him died. Messily.
No one knew where Kahoku had learned magic from in his secretive days before the coup, but he possessed control over fire, using it to further instill fear in those he subjugated.
Kahoku spent his days attempting to gain more power, copulating with anything that caught his eye, and hurting things just to watch them bleed.
Rafe spent his days regretting his choice, knowing now that death for them all, even ignoble, would have been preferable then the oath he made to Kahoku. He was trapped, however, and he knew it. The wolf he had respected was a monster and he was no better. Evil is as Evil does, and Rafe felt himself tainted beyond redemption. He was the best Lieutenant Kahoku could have asked for: calm, quiet, skilled, and most of all, obedient.
A year into his reign Kahoku heard an interesting rumor…a wish-granting kami, it was said, resided in the body of a white usagi youkai…
The evil wolf clan chief became interested…
